Planning Tips :: Holiday Weddings

If you have your heart set on a holiday wedding, keep in mind there are a few things that make holiday weddings different than non-holiday weddings. Take all the details into consideration before deciding whether a holiday wedding date will work for you!

Holiday Décor
The holidays have beautiful color palettes and traditional décor that can be incorporated, making your design concepts a little easier to come up with. Utilize the ability to incorporate the holiday into your décor. That being said, don't over-do the holiday theme! You don't need to include every Christmas decoration available...select one holiday theme and execute it elegantly.

Unpredictable Guest Attendance
Being that it's a holiday, some of your guests may already have holiday plans in place and not be able to attend. In addition, the holidays are generally big spending times for people and this may affect your guest's ability to afford to attend. During the holiday seasons, hotels, gas and travel costs also go up. Keep in mind that a holiday wedding could make your guest count lower than a non-holiday wedding date for several different reasons.

Expenses
During some holiday seasons, some of the details for your wedding may go up in price. For example, roses are going to be more expensive around Valentine's Day than other times of year. Keep this in mind when selecting your vendors and items for a holiday wedding! You may instead choose something not in demand during that holiday time for a more reasonable price. On the contrary, some other things may be priced more reasonably because it's in season! Make sure to select things like flowers, food, beverages, and such that fit the season and are readily available so there's no markup on the cost.

Vendors Availability
Some vendors don't generally work holidays. That being said, if you find one who does they may have higher rates in place for the holidays. Keep your budget in mind when you're selecting a wedding date, and make sure you're able to select vendors who can work on your holiday wedding date.

Planning Tips :: Winter Weddings

Winter weddings are so dreamy and beautiful! Christmas and holiday weddings can turn out to be so elegant! Plain evergreen trees with white lights make a dramatic effect, as you can see from these first photos in this post. Simple red and white poinsettias also look fabulous! Most importantly, the more sparkle the better! String lighting makes the perfect look for accenting a holiday wedding. Candles and reflective ornaments are perfect for table accents where you want to add some warmth, glow and sparkle!

Keep your guests warm! This should be a main focus if you're planning a wintry chilly wedding! Blankets, hot beverages, fire pits and heat lamps are all good ideas of things you can provide to keep your guests warm and comfortable.

Speaking of fire pits, S'mores stations are a wonderful addition to a wedding in chilly weather! Package the supplies as a favor for the guests and send them to the fire pit to have some fun. Not only is it delicious, but it's fun and entertaining for both children and adults!

Hot beverages are another station opportunity for winter weddings. Hot chocolate, hot cider, coffee, tea, or other warm beverages set up in a station format to look amazing and inviting for your guests to enjoy.

If you have the opportunity for snow pictures, at least grab a few. They always turn out superb!

Not sure what colors apply for a winter wedding? Silver and gold, shades of blue, red and green, red and silver, red and gold, and of course....classic wedding white always gives off a wintry, elegant, classic feel.

Don't stop the holiday wintry décor at the ceremony....bring the cheer to the reception and dinner areas as well. Each table at your wedding reception or special event can have colorful and festive linens, wintry centerpieces, holiday china and gift wrapped take-home favors all adding to the beautiful presentation.

Winter weddings give you the opprrtunity for entertainment that's not available at other times of the year. Photo booths are all the rage now days, so get Santa to come be a "prop" at your photo booth. Have Christmas carolers singing during cocktail hour or other section of the event to entertain the guests.

Planning Tips :: Wedding Budget Breakdown :: Lighting

Lighting is an element that will drastically change the look of your wedding! I know this will be my longest post yet, because it's my fave! With all of the different aspects of décor you could incorporate into your wedding day, this is always my first suggestion. The suggested amount of your budget to put towards lighting is 5%, so a $20,000 wedding budget would have a $1,000 lighting budget. You can always shift things around with your budget categories if you want to add or take away from that amount.

First off, candles are always a wonderful way to add romantic ambiance to your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception without breaking the bank. You can dim the lights in any room and let the candlelight take over! Be sure to verify that your venue allows candles before you plan to go this route. If you're allowed, use them every chance you get!

A professional lighting package will get you some ooh's and aah's from your guests. Spotlights for important things like the dance floor for your first dance and special moments, cake table to highlight the beautiful masterpiece, color wash lighting on the walls to give the room ambiance, and you can even have individual pin spotlights on your centerpieces to highlight them! Adding a lighting package can really add to the wow factor, so look into it any way you can!

A gobo is another great lighting addition you could include. It could be your names, monogram, a logo for your event., anything...and it's displayed on the wall, dance floor, or any other blank surface you want to display your detailed design on. Most lighting companies can provide an in-stock gobo or you can order one personalized with your names or initials.

Lit paper lanterns are a wonderful and inexpensive option for lighting and décor. It creates a great effect and they can be hung over any space or area that you want to accent. Over the dance floor, entry way, cake table, gift table, or a number of other places.

String lighting is another great choice for both indoor and outdoor events. With so many colors and sizes available, you can create some amazing looks with string lighting!

:: TIPS ::

1. Check with your venue to see if they offer a lighting package. Some have lighting already installed and permanently in place, but if they don't you can always rent your own lighting company to bring in. If you venue has them, see if they are included in your package or if they are additional.

2. If you're hiring an outside lighting company, make sure to coordinate with the venue so they have access to enter and setup. Lighting setup usually takes longer than other vendors setup time. Make sure your lighting company can have access to the venue and that they can bring in any equipment they need to setup and operate.

3. Before booking, have an in person meeting with the lighting company and ask to see the lighting effects in person. When you ask for pink lighting, their idea and your idea may be different. Make sure you schedule an appointment to see the lighting you're interested in before you book and make any adjustments together so you're on the same page.

4. If you're having a complicated lighting scheme and not just a few strings of lights, ask if the lighting company provides an onsite attendant to supervise the lights and make any adjustments needed. You should also inquire about if there will be any setup or tear down fees.

Planning Tips :: Wedding Budget Breakdown :: Flowers + Decor

Flowers and décor show your personality and help set the ambiance for your event, but they can be a significant portion of your budget. Here is the breakdown of what you need, some additional options, and cost saving tips to help ease the cost of your wedding flowers!

Suggested percentage of the budget for your flowers and décor is 15%. If you're wedding budget is $20,000, your floral and décor budget would be $3,000. Keep in mind that if you're not accessing other areas of the budget (for example, if you're not using hired transportation for the event...add that percentage of the budget to your floral and décor percentage so you can have a higher budget for flowers.

:: TIPS ::

1. To cut down on centerpiece costs, use a mix of small and large arrangements. Not only does it save on the overall cost, but it adds dimension and variety to the décor of the reception which is always a good thing!

2. See if it's an option to re-use your ceremony flowers at the reception. If you're not required to leave them or donate them at the ceremony location, you can have your florist, wedding planner, friend or family member move them to the reception location before the guests arrive.

3. Check to see if there are any delivery fees for your florist or décor. These charges will be in addition to the flower cost and should be taken into consideration for your budget.

4. Make sure you're using seasonal available flowers in your arrangements to be most cost effective. If you have a certain look or style you like but it's over your budget, check into having arrangements made from more cost-effective seasonally available options of the same color or shade.

Planning Tips :: Stay Cool at your Summer Wedding

If your wedding date is during the warm (hot) summer months, there are a few things couples should take into consideration and remember. Keep yourselves hydrated and cool, keep your wedding party hydrated and cool, and keep your guests hydrated and cool!

- Useful favors can be applied for the summer months! In the past we've done paper fans that act as ceremony programs, trendy sunglasses, or lovely parasols...give your guests something that's both beautiful and useful!

- Avoid early afternoon when scheduling outdoor activities because that is the hottest part of the day. If the heat is a deciding factor for you, try for morning/brunch or evening/sunset.

- Provide cold bottled water for everyone! Your guests will relish the opportunity to cool off!

- If your having any portion of the event outdoors, make sure to have a plan for keeping the bugs at bay. Citronella candles are great to use, and you can also provide mini bottles of repellant for guests to use if they see fit. Keep in mind that if you're near water, the bugs will definitely be active!

- Beauty touch ups will be needed in the heat! Keep a bag of touch up makeup nearby, along with hairspray, deodorant, perfume, and fans or cooling methods for yourselves and the wedding party. (Cold bottled water, paper fans, etc...)

- Humidity may have an effect on your hair! Take that into consideration and keep your touch up bag nearby for any heat related mishaps like frizz or sweat. An up-do is also a wonderful way to stay cooler!

- Experts say that clear tents are not great in summer months due to the sun and heat. White tents that block and reflect the light stay much cooler and will be much more comfortable for everyone.

DIY :: Citronella Candles for Outdoor Events

Don't let pesky bugs ruin your pretty party when there is a simple DIY that will totally save the outdoor festivities. These Citronella Candles are crazy easy and have that cute factor we so love.

MATERIALS

Soy wax flakes
Citronella oil
3.5" wick
Wax melting pot
Mini terracotta pots
Blue & white poster paint
Plastic cups
Floral clay
Scissors
Wooden skewers

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut 3 plastic cups to be slightly shorter in height than the terracotta pots. Fill cup A halfway with blue paint mixed with a splash of water. Fill cup B 3/4 high with white paint mixed with a splash of water. Fill cup C 3/4 high with about half water and half white paint.


Dip each terracotta pot in Cup C and swirl around to get a thin coat of white most of the way up the pot. Place on a piece of newspaper or cardboard to let dry 5 minutes.

Dip each terracotta pot in Cup B and swirl around to get an opaque coat of white halfway up the pot. Place on a piece of newspaper or cardboard to let dry 1/2 hour.
Dip each terracotta pot in Cup A to get a thin coat of blue on the bottom of the pot. Place on a piece of newspaper or cardboard to let dry 1 hour.

Fill the melting pot 1/3 full with wax flakes. Fill a saucepan halfway with water and place the melting pot in it over medium heat. Let the wax melt for about 15 minutes until clear and liquid.


Meanwhile, place a small chunk of floral clay in the hole at the bottom of each pot, then press in a wick. Add 12-13 drops of citronella oil to the melting wax flakes.

Pour in the melted wax into each terracotta pot, about 95% full. Position the wick in the center, and use a wooden skewer or two to keep it in place.

Let candles cool at room temperature for several hours. If they cool too quickly, you may see a small well develop around the wick. If that happens, you can just melt a pinch more wax and pour right over to make the top of the candle level. Trim the wicks short with scissors, and voila!
